Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal Therapy) is a procedure for treatment of teeth that are severely decayed, infected, and/or broken. Root canal therapy can save the life of your tooth, preventing the need for extraction.
When endodontic treatment is required, the nerve within the tooth has become infected and the canals within the tooth that hold the nerve must be disinfected. Once the canals have been cleared, a sealer paste and rubber compound is used to fill and seal the canals.
It is important to note that once a tooth undergoes successful root canal therapy, it becomes more brittle and should be protected with a dental crown to prevent chipping or cracking of the natural tooth structure.
Because of the complexity and difficulty of endodontic treatment (each tooth can have an array of root canal configurations) this treatment is always a challenge for your dentist. In some difficult cases, a referral to an endodontic specialist may be needed.
